Green Initiatives Committee – March 5th

March 13, 2013 by Ivana Ilic

The Green Initiatives Committee met on Tuesday, March 5th in the SGA office. All members were present.

The committee met with Larry Lawrence and Tim Decker  from the Physical Plant to inform them on the green bags in residence halls. Both agreed that we need to educate students on what items are recyclable. This coming Fall semester, as the freshman move-in, RA’s will be handing out a green bag along with an informational sheet about recycling. We are hoping this will increase the amount of recycling at UCA. Also, Tim Decker’s staff relocated some of the trash cans which were outside of the Student Center. We will also be looking into purchasing recycling containers with holes to fit  bottles, paper, and other recyclable materials.

For Green Week we are still contacting business’s for advertising and donations. The t-shirt design/color has also been finalized and we will be ordering them ASAP.

Blake will be in contact with Steven Overturf so he can design the Green Week shirts. They will be white and simple. Students will be allowed to tie-dye shirts themselves.

The Green Initiatives Committee did not meet on Tuesday, February 5th. However, we did discuss our plans via email.

Megan is contacting Tim Decker and Joe Wright to move some of the recycling cans to the outer areas of campus – like the COB, Lewis, and Mashburn/HYPER.  Justin has contacted the Area Coordinators on campus to get feedback on the green bags program.  We will hopefully figure everything out this semester so that next fall everyone will have green bags available in ALL campus housing.  Blake has given Allison all the T-Shirt information for Green Week, and she is researching alternatives to Hot Dog Mike.  Ivana is planning a meeting with Tim Decker about what we can do to help with Recyclemania.  Blake has been in contact with Amanda Brown about how we can help them with Green Week plans.  He will be calling the scheduling office this week to see if it is possible to reserve Alumni Circle instead of the Fountain for Green Week.

January 17, 2013 by Ivana Ilic

The Green Initiatives Committee met on Tuesday, November 27th in the SGA office. All members were present.

The green bags for recycling are now available in Farris Hall. Andrew will be emailing the Physical Plant to see when the fliers can be posted to advertise.

The Bike Share Program will be on hold until March of the Spring semester. The bikes will be held off-campus in a HPER storage unit to prevent damage during the winter months. The Ride is also willing to train a student worker to fix bikes.

Tim Decker emailed Megan and is willing to purchase more trash cans for the campus. The cost of each trash can is approximately $400. She will be emailing Larry Lawrence to verify any purchase.

Thursday, November 29th the Green Week interest meeting will be held in the SGA office. Our committee is expecting around ten RSO members to show up. We will be explaining how Green Week worked last year and the vision for this year. The hope is to set up a Green Week committee with members from each participating RSO to plan the event.

Green Initiatives Committee – November 13th

November 19, 2012 by Ivana Ilic

The Green Initiatives Committee met on Tuesday, November 13th in the SGA office. All members were present.

Justin created a PR announcement for athletic games which will bring attention to recycling at each event. The PR announcement reads: “A reminder to fans; please recycle all your paper, plastic, aluminum, and cardboard waste in one of the many recycling bins throughout the stands. If there is food in or on your container please do not place it in the recycling bin. Thank you.”

Justin will also be looking at lighting on campus, in particular, motion lights. He will email Larry Lawrence about the idea and ask details such as cost, installation fee, etc.

Megan will email Tim Decker about recycling on campus. The committee feels there is a need to disperse the recycling bins  to different areas on the edges of campus.

There will be an interest meeting during X-period on Thursday, November 29th for those RSO’s interested in Green Week. After the RSO’s have met with us, a Green Week Committee, specifically for Green Week, will be formed in which different members from each participating RSO will gather weekly to discuss events, planning, etc.
